The first meeting of the "Self-Regulated Learning Skills" workshop series this semester focused on effective group work and peer learning. Participants first came together through introduction and ice-breaking activities. Then, what self-regulated learning is was defined and ideas were exchanged on how this process could be related to group work and peer learning. In the continuation of the workshop, information on the basic characteristics of successful groups and group work strategies was shared.
Following this information session, peer learning techniques were transferred to the participants. The workshop was enriched with strategies regarding the difficulties that may be encountered during group work and methods to overcome these difficulties. Additionally, websites such as Slack, Trello, Canva and Miro were introduced as tools to support group work.
In the last part of the workshop, participants were divided into two separate groups and each group created mind maps on the themes of group work and peer learning. This interactive event enabled participants to better understand the subject and have fun. The created mind maps were completed with evaluation and feedback after sharing between groups. At the end of the workshop, students evaluated the workshop by sharing the new information they learned via Padlet.
We would like to thank Zeyneb Gazel, who contributed to the organization of this productive workshop, and all the students who participated. This event provided participants with valuable information about the importance of effective group work and peer learning, while also providing the opportunity to put these skills into practice.
